Commercial PHP Shopping Carts
(Note: We are just beginning to work on the reviews for the commercial carts. Once it is complete it will cover much of the same areas as the open source reviews. Please be patient, researching all of the features and comparisons it very time consuming.)
The advantage of a commercial package is the rough edges are generally gone and there is more detailed documentation. One could argue that this is better, but that does depend on your level of comfort for "rough edges" vs cost.

The Quick Review - A First Look
X-Cart is impressive in the quality and professionalism of the system from the end to end. There is a active community of third party addon modules. Of particular note is the Affiliate module which is help you expand your marketing approach. The X-Cart License allows you to modify the source code to your cart as you see fit. This gives you a commercial product with the option to customize it however you see fit.
CubeCart is a popular and inexpensive eCommerce solution. There is a free version that has various copyright labels throughout the cart. The upgrade to the next version does not have those restrictions.
